[–] Deaf people of Reddit, If you were born deaf and have never heard the English language, is your inner monologue in sign language? If not, what is it? imnotpetersinger 17 points ago * (lasted edited 20 days ago) in AskReddit

That's a classic philosophical question but not really a great analogue to this case. There are concrete physiological and neurological differences between a deaf person and a hearing person. It's more likely and plausible that a deaf person and a hearing person would disagree about what sounds normal than it is that neurotypical people with 100% vision perceive colors vastly differently (though they do to some extent -- see Lera Boroditsky's work). Can we ever 100% know that we see the same blue as everyone else? No, but we don't have powerful reasons to think that we would not or do not like we do in the deaf / hearing case.

Despite having 100% loss...dreams are also like that - in my dreams I can hear and talk normally.

Here's a question -- how do you know that you're hearing and talking normally? If you've had 100% hearing loss since age 2, how can you know if what seems normal in your dreams really is what most other people would describe as normal?

My worst breakup was with Stacy. It was a Sunday morning. We were reading the paper, and I said "Oh my God, I think the Eagles could clinch the NFC East!" and she said that we're done.

There are various degrees of political. This isn't directly political like, say, a campaign ad or YouTube rant about a politician. It's more indirectly relevant to current events. Clearly what happened today is part of the causal chain of events that lead me to post this. But the same video could be posted any other time and not be seen as overtly political. That's the difference between this video and a campaign ad or YouTube political rant, both of which would always be deleted.

Yeah okay, I'm sure the counter-protesters were literally all communists, right? Lots of ANTIFA, sure, but you don't have to be a radical leftist to protest Nazis. In any case, suppose the dead woman was a communist. That's a human being who could have been reasoned into a more rational political worldview with reason, love and patience. But now that person is dead. Communist or not, of course I'm angry. Can only hope someone doesn't kill you for what you believe, because there's hope for you too.

Why would you not credit the artist? You expose their work to thousands and can't be arsed to give credit. What is your excuse?

[–] Recently started listening to JRE. My impression is that Joe Rogan is the world's smartest, highest functioning idiot. imnotpetersinger 5 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago) in JoeRogan

If I wanted to straight up call him stupid I would have said "Joe is fucking stupid." On the other hand, "world's smartest, highest functioning idiot" is very clearly cheeky, playful, tongue in cheek writing. Don't be Mad Online because you can't pick up on cues that are obvious to nearly everyone else.

"World's smartest, highest functioning idiot" is not an oxymoron. "Smartest" and "highest functioning" both modify "idiot" and they're rough synonyms. Not an oxymoron. If taken literally, it just means that he's the smartest idiot of all the idiots. But I didn't mean it literally anyway and I'm not literally calling him an idiot. It's tongue in cheek writing. See the edit in the OP.

All of that is consistent with what I said. You shouldn't interpret "world's smartest, highest functioning idiot" as me seriously calling him a literal idiot. I think most people who read that will understand the tongue in cheek, only half-serious nature of the comment.
