[–] Is there a way to get a discount on kindle books if you already own the paperback/hardcover? jeweledshadow 1 points ago in AskReddit

I love reading, and have collected a massive number of paperbacks and hardcover books. However, after wrist injuries and surgeries on both hands, it's looking like reading physical books without pain is no longer an option for me. I have a huge bookshelf of things that I can't read but that I don't want to get rid of (because after enough years books can become comfort blankets) and I don't want to have to replace (because paying for the same book twice is fine for one or two things, but not an entire bookshelf.)
Is there any way to get a discount on kindle books, if you already have the paperback or hardcover copy?

We went to a convention together, and heard a speaker answer the question “Do you have any advice for someone who wants to become an author?” with a single word:

Now we quote this advice at each other.

[–] What surgeries have you had on your face or body? jeweledshadow 1 points ago in AskReddit

Carpal tunnel release and TFCC repair (on both wrists)

I both appreciate that you found a solution that worked for you, and that you recognize how sad it is that theatrics are required. I hope that as time goes forward we, as a society, can stop forcing people into this position.

[–] People of the customer service industry, what is the sweetest thing that ever happened to you? jeweledshadow 7 points ago in AskReddit

A customer asked whether my nail polish was yellow. I told him it was, and he said he was colorblind and that was one of the few colors he could see.

My brother had some great advice when I started learning to program. He said that the best time to stop for the night was after implementing a solution, but before you test it. Go to bed feeling like you’ve solved the small problem and then test it in the morning so you don’t get sucked into trying to fix it all night.

I bought a Uhuru Bluetooth mouse because it’s relatively flat, very light, and the buttons are ridiculously easy to press. It makes a whole lot of difference with my RSI.

If you want, put them back in the oven a little more after the simple syrup. The water will evaporate and there will be a little sugar crust left behind!

You go, girl/guy/person! Congrats on buying a house and reading the fine print! (If this comes across as sarcastic I definitely didn’t mean it that way- buying a house is a tough process and is a real achievement.)

I know how you feel. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to send me a message. I feel your pain. When I felt that way I started taking classes online- for me it was in Computer Science, but there are lots of options. Maybe through something like that you could discover a passion you didn’t know was there.

Majoring in English helps you realize that everything around you is a text rich in history and context. It also helps you learn to frame arguments that are persuasive no matter how seemingly irrelevant the subject matter. You learn to take disparate facts from one area and to apply that knowledge to deepen your understanding of something else.

Being an English major has also really helped me in my new career as a computer programmer. I’m still gathering facts and piecing them together, but now it might be from that one lecture I went to years ago, plus a conversation I overheard between coworkers, plus a bug that I fixed weeks ago. All of that knowledge can be gathered and put together to create a hypothesis of the cause of a new bug, or a reason why I should put two people in contact with one another because they might be stepping on each other’s toes without knowing.

I didn’t think about any of this back when I was 17 and choosing a major. Back then I just knew that I was bad at Physics, and had always liked reading. It took getting a BA in English to discover why you should major in English.

[–] I get my relo bonus after the start of my internship. I can't financially front housing and flight costs for internship location without it. What did you do? jeweledshadow 2 points ago in cscareerquestions

At least in the US, in Massachusetts and California. I would look up how bonuses are taxed where you are located- it tends to be ridiculous.

Depending on where you are working, though, they might have some sort of other relocation service available that would kick in before your first day. Definitely ask your recruiter.

I guess I hadn’t thought about needing a different size of horse being a consideration. In that situation I’m glad that leasing is a thing, because I hate to think of a horse being neglected because a kid grew too big for it!

I have been looking for a hands free mouse option, and the 3D rudder looks amazing. I use a Mac, though-do you know if there is something similar that would work with a Mac?
