[–] Anyone know average standing cost of utilities in the US? johnconnors88 2 points ago in Frugal

You need to call your utilities company and ask for an itemized bill. When I did this with my electric bill, it listed the daily base change, the hourly kilowatt charge, the fuel surcharge, and all the taxes line by line.

[–] Best Cannoli in Birmingham? johnconnors88 1 points ago in Birmingham

Home of the $4.91 Cannoli, no thank you. I will take the gun and leave the cannoli!!

[–] Got a 3 month trial with my new car. I like it and wanna subscribe. Why is the pricing so ****ed up? johnconnors88 1 points ago in siriusxm

Those pricing days are numbered. Trump just signed MMA (Music Modernization Act), in which Sirius XM was against. Be perpared to pay much much more for the music royalty fees. Those $5 and $6 a month promo offers will be a thing of the past. Be prepared to pay more..$$$. Just FYI.

[–] Why is it so hard to cancel? johnconnors88 1 points ago in siriusxm

SiriusXM gets old fast, very fast. Stick to the free 30 day trial, with a new email address, it's a pain in the rear every month, so is talking to the retention department. Both should be easy to do. Many people give their credit card and pay the standard rates for the reasons mentioned above. Too much of a hassle!

[–] Closed account but spectrum keeps credit card on file? johnconnors88 0 points ago in chartercable

They are officially a ISP, I am pretty sure their internet servers are better protected than most. I would be more concerned with disregarding your request. They keep sending mailings to our house, dozens of phone calls, registration on their do not call, mail, or knock privacy list, mailings keep coming. You are not alone in your privacy concerns, and mine for that matter is of no particular concern to them. I told them, you work for me. Their actions spoke differently, and I took my business elsewhere.

[–] Closed account but spectrum keeps credit card on file? johnconnors88 0 points ago in chartercable

Call your credit card company and put a merchant block on them and be done with it. They should have removed your credit card immediately upon your request, but it shows who runs the show. They are not consumer first. Once your credit card expires, forget them. Should you ever decide to do business with them in the future, paper bills with a check with snail mail. Forget Charter Rectrum!

Have him checked to see if he is manic/depressive, before you start bouncing a ton of checks.

When it comes to the lottery, it is just another tax on the poor, and the gambling addict.

[–] Is Amazon Prime worth it? johnconnors88 1 points ago in Frugal

I can find plenty of better things to do my money than spend it on a Prime membership. If you plan your purchases in a timely manner the 2 day shipping factor becomes irrelevant..

[–] Is Amazon Prime worth it? johnconnors88 1 points ago in Frugal

As a frugal person I never saw the value in Prime. You can get free shipping for anything $25 and over. Sure you have to wait 3-4 days extra, but paying upfront for the privilege of 2 day shipping. Not when it takes them up to 48 hours to give it to the delivery driver. Most USPS Priority mail from coast to coast take 2 days. Never had a need for prime music, kindle books, and their prime video has alot 2b desired. You need 9 shipments at $14 each per year to break even. Amazon prime is going to get ridiculously more expensive now that USPS is ending their heavily discounted shipping deal with Amazon. Amazon makes billions off the promise of free 2 day. The fact that I have to pay for my own returns is a deal breaker for me.

[–] Birmingham homicides in danger of hitting 22 year high johnconnors88 0 points ago in Birmingham

Loss of life should not be trivialized in anyway. We have a serious problem in this city on how we resolve conflict. The loss of life shatters families and communities. Precious tax dollars, and community resources are being exhausted with this loss of life. We are all connected, no matter how far removed we think we are. We are our brothers keepers.

[–] Carol Anderson on The Daily Show discussing the problematic Alabama voter ID laws johnconnors88 0 points ago in Alabama

You know what the problem is here. Americans have given the ultimate sacrifice, so others US citizens can have this right. And only US citizens should have this right. Getting on a bus, or mailing away for a US passport that lasts 10 years, should not be viewed as a hardship, rather as their Civic duty. More is done in the US to divide us, than to unite us. The voter ID laws in this country must be working for most, otherwise we would have changed them. Those who want to obolish voter ID laws are the same people that want to get rid of the electoral college. We are a republic, not a democracy. The right to vote is a right of the US citizenry. Period. We are a nation of laws, not people. Read the Bill of Rights, and the US Constitution.

[–] Would it be possible to negotiate prices for slower internet speed? johnconnors88 1 points ago in chartercable

I am really glad Charter Spectrum had given you a great turn around time. In our area there is only satellite and lowly DSL for internet, 30 days or change the name on the account. I have spoken to 3 supervisors in the retention department, being polite as can be, no dice.

    [–] Sick of Spectrum's 1 Option Only Plan/Pricing johnconnors88 1 points ago in chartercable

Please tell them you want to stay grandfathered in at the 50 mbps. I know the price, and 50 mbps is plenty. If you stay grandfathered in at the 50 you beat them at their own game. Sure your pricing may top out at $65, but compared to the top out price of the 200 mbps you will be way ahead. Believe me I have been through this before. One more thing, purchase your own modem router. Because Charter changed the router rental fee, into the WiFi access fee, same thing, except now they can say we give your modem for free. Not fooled one bit.

[–] New flights at BHM johnconnors88 1 points ago in Birmingham

Birmingham is not the most popular place to live. Which makes is low on demand for fights inbound or outbound. It costs $175 to $250 extra to flight to ATL. Plus $100 to park for a week at the airport. So that is an extra $300 per person. $600 is a lot for a 40 min up and down flight. Just $20 for gas RT, and $50 for parking in ATL. I pocket $525 by not flying out of BHM. Also a non stop flight eliminates many of the man made snafus of the pathetic airline industry, and the antiquated US air traffic control systems.

[–] New flights at BHM johnconnors88 1 points ago * (lasted edited 21 days ago) in Birmingham

I will have to respectfully disagree here. It is about profitability and cheeks in the seats, whether or not an airline will expand service out of BHM. Like I stated earlier the mayor has gone to great lengths and that offer fell flat on its face. The ATL juggernaut market, makes BHM look weak. Atlanta is the busiest in the nation, and one of the busiest in the world. They must be doing something right. I go out of my way to fly out of Atlanta. A non stop flight eliminates many of the man made snafus of the pathetic airline industry, and the antiquated US air traffic control systems.

You're caught between a rock and a hard place. Charter knows their competition in your area. The rep told me that they are a bundling company. So their best rates come when you bundle multiple services. Which ALL bundle pricing will exceed $50/month in your budget. The only way back to new customer pricing with Charter is to go away for 30 days, or put the new account under somebody else's name in your household. Can you hardwire your hardware with your DSL connection. Can you share your WiFi with your neighbors account, and split the monthly payment, (outside the box thinking). Lastly, find a way to write off the cost on your taxes, or take the $15/monthly overage difference from somewhere else in your household budget. There are many ways to peel an onion. Good Luck. PS I really do not like Charters hard stance on internet only pricing..Unyielding at best.

[–] New flights at BHM johnconnors88 0 points ago * (lasted edited 21 days ago) in Birmingham

The airport authority has nothing to do with how the airlines dictate the non-stop routes. There are 1-2 flights midweek on Delta BHM-LGA nonstop. Otherwise ALL of the non-stop flights left back in the early to mid 2000's when stock investers were filling up planes to fund the Jefferson County Sewer debt expansion. And we all know how well that went. The mayor of Bham offered Delta airlines incentives to make their hub here. So you see there aren't any lack of non-stops for the lack of trying. Atlanta it is, for the foreseeable future!

[–] Birmingham City Council unanimously approves new surveillance program. 94 cameras in “high crime” areas. $672,000.00 annually. johnconnors88 -2 points ago in Birmingham

Total was of money for these cameras. Most will be bullet ridden, spray painted lenses. Are you kidding me. This reminds me when mayor Larry Langford want to hand out Bibles to prevent crime. So funny. I would let the residents form their own neighbor watch programs. Bat shit crazy.

[–] Having a really hard time accepting myself and my current situation (I know I can change) johnconnors88 5 points ago in Frugal

First of all failure is an event, not a person. Pay off your debt. Understand you are not alone in your debt, 70% of Americans cannot pay a $1000 emergency. The more frugal and financially secure you become, the spend happy family and friends will seem foreign to your frugal ways. Saving money and frugality is another full time job. We are constantly being bombarded to spend. Cheap credit is not a way to raise our standard of living. We are a nation of instant satisfaction. Surround yourself with like minded people. Being average is just getting by in our country. Go forth and prosper! God bless you.

[–] How much do you typically pay in water & electric? johnconnors88 2 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago) in Frugal

This is the website that took my electric savings to the next Level: https://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/ If you cannot find savings from there, I do not know what to tell you. Call up your power company and ask for an itemized bill. All bills have a base charge, taxes, and misc. fees. Our bill is $16.23 just to have power connected every month. The itemized bill will tell you what charges are fixed and what charges you can do something about. My electric bill averages 540 kwh we never go over 900 kwh even in the summer. Your cable boxes, stand by power on TVs. You need a programmable thermostat. Ceiling fans and box fans cool people not rooms, so use them to your advantage and turn off accordingly.
