[–] Considering joining Red Pocket....have a couple of questions johnconnors88 1 points ago * (lasted edited 4 hours ago) in NoContract

Red pocket is very good. I have the same plan as you 500/500/500 on Verizon's CDMA network. I buy my plan off their eBay vendor, it runs me $99/year or $8.25/month when paid in full for 1 year. No cell bills for a year. Red pocket does not have roaming, and tell you to turn off your roaming settings when you sign up. When you purchase an annual plan on eBay make sure you purchase the plan with SIM cards included. After that you can renew annual service on your original sim card. Once you data/minutes/texts run out, that's it until your next monthly renewal date. Red pocket doesn't work outside the US. Write down your IMEI number this is how the red pocket rep will identify you. I believe you can purchase extra gb/txt/mins for a fee if you run out before your monthly renewal. If you go with an Annual red pocket plan on eBay, you have 30 days for a full refund. Oh if someone asks you who is you cell carrier, just say ATT, it makes things alot easier. Edit: If you need 24/7/365 customer support and service go with a full price carrier like ATT. I find their customer service just ok. But for $8 bucks a month, I ain't complaining.

[–] How do you actually meet a partner these days? johnconnors88 -1 points ago * (lasted edited 3 days ago) in Birmingham

Perception is reality. Whatever you perceive to be true, probably is. Let me put this another way, closed persona, closed possibilities. What you put out to the universe is mirrored back to you. Be the person you want to attract. If you want honesty be honest. We only scratch the surface of meaningful interaction because we don't want to get hurt and look foolish. Keep telling yourself all I need is one, and I'm done. Keep improving upon yourself, (physically, financially, spiritually), so when the right one come along you will be ready. Positive energy out, positive energy reflected back. Good Luck. JC. Weed out the wolves in sheep's clothing. You can always spot them, they walk behind, or in front, in the relationship, never beside you!

[–] What is the best VOIP residential home phone service? johnconnors88 1 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago) in VOIP

I second VoIP.ms, I love this voip service. It does take a little to configure, but very feature rich, and economical in price. I call back home/text while in Mexico on the Zoiper app. Comes in handy when I cannot use our cell phones. The call filtering feature can block telemarketers, campaign robo calls without extra charges for this feature. I love having a VoIP phone line to keep my cell free from business that can wait. If the power goes out to my VoIP ATA adapter, all calls get forwarded to my cell. All voicemails are sent to email with an audio file. A $25 balance lasts me a year.

[–] $99 Lifetime service transfer for new purchases Valid for TiVo Series 2, TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD, TiVo HDXL and TiVo Premiere thru Aug 7 johnconnors88 1 points ago in Tivo

I have a TiVo Premiere XL with Lifetime since 2010. I use it for OTA TV programs. The 2 tuners are enough without recording conficts. The longer I keep it the more I save on my initial investment. If you use your Premiere for OTA like I do, I would wait till Tivo comes out with a new unit with an OTA ASTC 3.0 tuner. My Series 2 was useless after the OTA digital transition back in 2009. Just some food for thought.

[–] Why Cord Cutters Actually Are Saving a Huge Amount Over Cable Subscribers johnconnors88 5 points ago in technews

Cable execs..."IF WE CANNOT CONTROL THEIR EXODUS FROM US, TIME TO REGULATE THE CORD TETHERED TO US!" Oh how smart/evolved we have believed we have become, only to realize we have a broadband cord/noose around our necks. The one who controls the strings, controls the puppet, says the puppet master. Remember net neutrality has not fully kicked in yet. You just might be playing right into your ISP's profit wheelhouse! Only deregulating the entire industry, is our last hope. They are way ahead of the consumer in the psychology department.

[–] where to get audio streams? johnconnors88 1 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago) in MLBStreams

Get yourself a Sirius Xm radio on Ebay, garage sale, or on sale. I bought a Stratus 7 satellite radio with car kit on Sale online at Best Buy for $16.95, free shipping, plus 3 months of free service. Never saw something go out of stock so fast. You can get them down after free trial, for 6 months for $30. Only pay with a prepaid Sirius XM gift card at Best Buy. Tell them to Bill you through the mail. Keeps you from having to giving them your Credit card. Tired of MLBTV pricing games and blackouts. Good Luck. JC. Edit: Gone are the days, of getting audio/video access to an MLB game, without having a frugal financial strategy!

[–] Need some roadtrip advice johnconnors88 3 points ago in Frugal

Avacados are a must. Hard boiled eggs too. Some canned fish. The cover the bodies needs of essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids. The roadside foods are non essential carbohydrates, loaded with frutose, and corn sweetners, and gluten. You will be hungry and more tired in a few hours. And broke too. Stretch and move to prevent blood clots.

[–] Frugal Request: How To Keep Rent / Monthly Expenses Low or $0 johnconnors88 3 points ago in Frugal

You should look into becoming the superintendent of a building, or a church caretaker. Property managers that live on property usually have rent included. Food for thought.

[–] Frugal tips for airplane travel johnconnors88 7 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago) in Frugal

Check in 24 hours before your flight, print out boarding pass. Have a full stomach before entering the airport. Put a copy of your airline itinerary in the front pocket of checked bag, email and cell on luggage tags. Always check the gate monitor when going to your connection fight. Put the airline reservations number and itinerary call letters in the cell phone memo. Ex: Delta EXGAA. Tie a bright colored ribbon to the handle of your checked bag for easy identification on the luggage turnstiles. Lots of black and brown bags. Take a pic of your checked bag with your cell to show the gate agent in case of lost luggage. Bring a charging brick for your electronics. Have a great trip!

[–] Why so much local news ALL day on Bham OTA local TV stations? johnconnors88 -9 points ago in Birmingham

WBRC news is hard to watch due to the production snafus. My choice is NBC 13 WVTM very professional, and the 1080i is crisp and beautiful.

[–] Advice on car situation johnconnors88 99 points ago in Frugal

    $85,000 - $300 = $84,700. Still in good shape financially.

[–] Advice on car situation johnconnors88 15 points ago in Frugal

85k in the bank and you are essentially driving a vehicle that is bought by your parents. Again routine maintenance on a vehicle is a fact of life. Welcome to cost of ownership my friend.

[–] Advice on car situation johnconnors88 4 points ago in Frugal

Spend the money on your brakes, they could save your from serious injury or death. $300 seems like a bargain under those circumstances.

[–] Advice on car situation johnconnors88 5 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago) in Frugal

I would replace the rotors all the time. I don't believe in brake resurfacing. It's leaves you with thinner rotors, and gives the repair shop a higher profit margin. Take it from me get new rotors whenever possible. Edit: Thinner rotors have a tendency to warp under excessive heat and braking stress. Quicker turn around and back to the repair shop.

[–] Any way to save money on gas johnconnors88 4 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago) in Frugal

Most people are their own worst enemy when it comes to saving gas. People have unrealistic expectations when it comes to saving gas. The #1 gas saving tip, is to only drive when necessary. Read you owners manual and maintain your car according to its recommendations. You will only get between 10%-15% mileage savings with proper driving techniques and maintenance. Buy a car with low cost per mile ownership ratings. Only use the proper gas grade, oil viscosity, and tire size for your vehicle. People do not get the big picture when it comes to cost to own a particular vehicle. Insurance, routine maintenance, mileage, driving techniques all factor in. People who drive to and pickup their children from school everyday, when there is a perfectly good tax funded school bus service boggles my mind. Idling at the local drive thru instead of going inside? Really? If people wanted to save money they would get the BIG picture of cost to own a vehicle. People who drive every where but all the while spend thousands on prescription meds because they are sick because they are not physically active. Drive less. Live more. Big picture.

[–] Any issues with turning off circuit breaker during vacation? johnconnors88 4 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago) in Frugal

Turn off the water to your home. Plenty people have come home to a soaking surprise. Tell the alarm company not to call you, call the police for the specific dates. This is a great time to change the batteries, and reprogram your thermostat to some lower/higher settings. Eat or throw away any unnecessary food, and turn down the fridge one setting. Shut the breaker off to garage opener, and pad lock the door track. Have the mail held at post office, and have neighbor collect random fliers. Have a neighbor park their car in your driveway while your away. Mow your grass the night before you leave. Load your suitcases in the garage, or during the over night not to announce your departure. Have a neighbor keep an eye out for unusual activity. Turn off the ringers to your home phone, or unplug them. Write this list on your fridge in an envelope so you can undo this list upon return. Have a great trip!
