[–] [UPDATE] $230 electric bill... when I haven't used heat. What's up? johnconnors88 3 points ago in Frugal

I am really surprised you are STILL having this problem??? Before you went away, I would have shut off every electric breaker except for the fridge and HAVC unit. I also shut off the water to my home so I do not come home to any wet surprises. Shut off electric to each area of your home and go read the meter. IF the electric meter continues to run, you have a power drain somewhere on your property.

This is the website that took my electric savings to the next Level: https://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/ If you cannot find savings from there, I do not know what to tell you. Call up your power company and ask for an itemized bill. All bills have a base charge, taxes, and misc. fees. Our bill is $16.23 just to have power connected every month. The itemized bill will tell you what charges are fixed and what charges you can do something about. My electric bill averages 540 kwh we never go over 900 kwh even in the summer. Your cable boxes, stand by power on TVs. You need a programmable thermostat. My thermostat is set at 59 when we sleep, 64 when we are away, and 66 when we are home. A sweatshirt and wool socks are your friends. Boil a pot of water and raise the humidity in your living space, you will be much more comfortable. Compare and see where you fit in: https://www.eia.gov/electricity/sales_revenue_price/pdf/table5_a.pdf

[–] What's everyones stance on Costco? johnconnors88 2 points ago in Frugal

Have your Vet send the prescriptions over to the Costco pharmacy. My Vet charged me $45+ for him/her to fill it. Costco $1.98. OMG. This was a game changer.

[–] Any help with last minute flights? johnconnors88 3 points ago in Frugal

Clear your browser history and cookies before you go over to the airlines website to book. Also you can save as much as $50 or more not to choose your seat at time of booking. Do not check a bag extra $$.

[–] Looking For An Inexpensive VOIP provider To Mess Around With johnconnors88 1 points ago in VOIP

Flat rate $4.95/mo. is for unlimited incoming minutes, roughly equals 5000 minutes. All out going calls are .009 minute and they do not round up like some providers do. Full of more features than one will ever use. And very customizable to every budget. I love Voip.Ms.

[–] Clueless consumer help johnconnors88 1 points ago * (lasted edited 16 days ago) in VOIP

Get yourself an OBIhai 200 or any Voip ATA device that works with Voip.ms. Port your current Canadian number over to Voip.ms a Canadian Voip provider. Get the Zoiper app in the Google play store, this is where your Voip.ms Canadian number will ring on your cell over WiFi or 4G. Have your Voip.ms number forwarded to your T-Mobile number to receive calls over cell voice networks.

Get yourself a Google Voice number, and have people call your GV when in the states. Change your cell voicemail on your cell to say, "I am out of range here in the US please call my alternate GV number". You can have your GV calls forwarded to ring your T-Mobile number when you have cell signal.

You will get all calls over Wifi, 4G internet, or cellular voice networks. Problem solved. And to answer your question, Can I make outgoing calls on both numbers? Yes on Voip.ms via Zoiper app, yes via GV over GV app, both over WiFi and 4G. Remember you will have to secure a US phone number first, (to port into GV), preferably thru a cheap prepaid MVNO cell carrier with the cost of a month of service. It also costs $20 usd. to port any US number into GV.

Edit: You can eliminate the Obihai 200/Voip.ms/Zoiper solution by call forwarding your current Canadian home phone service to GV when in the US, if possible. You will lose your ability to make calls through your current Canadian number. Good Luck JC

[–] Geico cancelled my plan- car Insurance for 1st-time insured? johnconnors88 2 points ago in Frugal

I don't understand what's all the fuss about. Insurance company raises your rates...leave. You are being put into an algorithm a price is spit out. Credit score, mileage, type of vehicle, even whether you will stay or go when your rates are raised. Towing, rental, glass, roadside assistance all coverages when used goes down on your C.L.U.E report, or your Hidden insurance score X0-X997. You are being profiled. Insurance company are a dime a dozen. You want a great company and the best price, learn how to beat them at their own game. Become a responsible well informed consumer of insurance.

[–] Geico cancelled my plan- car Insurance for 1st-time insured? johnconnors88 2 points ago * (lasted edited 21 days ago) in Frugal

Insurance broker deals with lots of underwriters who write insurance policies for different companies. When you call one company like Geico you get Geico to write all your policies. A one trick pony. I called an insurance broker who does commercial, personal, insurance policies. I got insurance from 3 different insurance companies saving hundreds. You call one brand insurance company is like getting an insurance suit off the rack. You call an insurance broker, they will give you a custom insurance fit. Huge tip.

[–] Frugal mindset is wearing me down johnconnors88 1 points ago in Frugal

What's the point if you don't enjoy the process? We prioritize our wants, and budget them in. Frugality shouldn't feel like a grind. Balance is key.

[–] Cheep car insurance johnconnors88 1 points ago in Frugal

Look at dropping collision and comprehensive insurance. Your cars value has depreciated to a point that these insurances are not frugal to carry. Get rid of the roadside and glass coverage, huge waste of money. Raise your deductible to $500-$1000, crazy but it shows the insurance company you are willing to absorb some of the claims cost. Take a defensive driving course for the insurance discount. You need to put some time between your accidents and tickets with a clean driving history.

[–] Some of my habits to live a relatively frugal lifestyle. johnconnors88 2 points ago in Frugal

Amen..Never thought my 2 rain barrels would be saving us so much $$$ on our water and sewer bills.

Please help. Where did you source your HVAC parts? Suppliers only sell to licensed contractors in my area.

[–] Is Vivint a legit company? johnconnors88 -1 points ago in homedefense

Forget about Vivint. Unless you want to be in a LOOOONG contract to the toon of $6800. Go over to their website and read all of their Terms of Service. You will be amazed how much Vivint will charge to have a smart wireless thermostat, smart locks, etc., etc. I love a secure home like the next guy, but Vivant is looking for some serious Passive income over the next 5 years. I stopped doing contracts with all my service vendors. They are only as good as their last month of service. This auto contract renewal with some companies is outright stealing. We are month to month for ALL!

[–] Tips for buying car insurance johnconnors88 1 points ago in Frugal

DO NOT PAY FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ON YOUR INSURANCE!!! https://clark.com/insurance/when-not-to-contact-your-insuran/ Its a scam to raise your premiums $$$$. Chip in your windshield, renting a car, towing, etc. These go against your hidden insurance score. X0-X997. Your rate will increase without a claim. Wiki insurance score. Get AAA if you need roadside. I'd avoid it totally, if I were you. Your insurance agent loves you when you make these claims.

[–] Tips for buying car insurance johnconnors88 4 points ago in Frugal

Alot of factors determine your insurance rate. Your credit score and history is one. You clean driving record, or lack thereof, with accidents and tickets. How long you have had your driver's license. If you had car insurance before and did you let your insurance lapse for lack of payment.

What is in your control is the make and model of car that you purchase. Some cars are cheaper to insure. Whether you take your state minimum limits of insurance, (highly ill advisable). The amount of your deductible, go with the highest you are comfortable with. Make sure you get uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Towing, glass, and roadside coverages are convenient to have, but if you use them your rates will go up without an accident. Take a AAA membership instead. You carry insurance for damages in the thousands, and above. Not to bridge a $100-$500 expense. I hope this helps.

    [–] Mlb.tv sale johnconnors88 16 points ago in MLBStreams

Wait for the one after Father's day.$49.99, after the all Star game $17.99, and lastly around Mid August is $9.99. Depends on how my team is doing is how soon, or how long I hesitate to pull the trigger. I would pay full price if MLB.TV would remove the black outs that follows my home team. It's the principal, and every time I see a baseball broadcast with 3/4 of the stadium seats empty, I just shake my head.
