[–] I need help finding signs! justtiptoeingthru 1 points ago in asl

OP wrote: “... identify a sign that has more than 3 meanings in English.” and used ‘true’ and ‘real’ as examples. Maybe I’m missing something in OP’s explanation/example, but my suggestion was what I thought of first.

Now that I’ve been thinking and thinking on the nature of Sign as it relates to OP’s post and what you said... perhaps (using OP’s example), the next English word in that sequence would be ‘ensure’? What I’m understanding from your comment is the Sign has to be exactly the same for all 3 different English words? Is that your point? If so, then yes I understand.

    No, they aren’t, not really.

Summer: make a fist, leaving the index finger out straight; put against forehead, palm down, drag hand away while curling index finger, making a x-handshape.

Ugly: exact same shape, motions, etc as summer but location is just under the nose & above upper lip.

Cereal: slightly different in that the motion of the finger is a slightly wiggly x-handshape (sort of alternates between pointing and becoming the letter ‘x’) and the arm moves in the direction the index finger points to and the location is on the chin, just under the lower lip.

    Here’s one: ugly, summer, cereal.

[–] What does this sign mean? justtiptoeingthru 3 points ago in asl

“Negative”? “Worm”? Classifier for “sneak around”? Indicating the level of a fluid in a container? Sooo many possibilities.

    I vote “worm”.

    ASL University

Here’s a resource you can check out... best free self-paced online learning resource for ASL I’m aware of.

[–] In the country where you live, what would be the equivalent of losing Notre Dame? justtiptoeingthru 1 points ago in AskReddit

For me... it’s hard to say which of our (US) monuments/edifices would equal the gravitas of Notre Dame Cathedral.

Here’s a few to mull over:

Statue of Liberty This one I think would be close but... idk.

    Arlington National Cemetery

    Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Any of the war memorials. For me, it’d be the Vietnam Women’s Memorial commemorating all the nurses’ service in Vietnam (I think it’s almost directly across the Vietnam Memorial) and the Iwo Jima Memorial

    Jefferson & Lincoln Memorials

    Possibly Mount Rushmore

Massive (+75% damage, outside of the usual semi annual firestorms) to Yellowstone and/or Yosemite would definitely be a devastating shock. Ohhh... Grand Canyon comes to mind... imagine something causing a large (say... 50 miles) section of both sides of the canyon walls to crumble into the gorge...

    Geez... how high are you??

But yeah... that’s a deep thought. They’d be a force to be reckoned with.

[–] Just made a fresh pound of canna butter! 7.5 grams of high quality cannabis went into making each bar. I clarified 2lbs of butter, decarboxolated my cannabis, & used sunflower lethicin to create this top notch product justtiptoeingthru 302 points ago * (lasted edited 2 days ago) in trees

I remember my first cannabutter experience. This is way back in the late 1980s. Four of us pitched in and bought a stick (it was the same size as a standard stick of butter) of cannabutter for like $25 or so. We didn’t know how to ingest it so after a little discussion and brainstorming we decided to melt a tablespoon or two of it in a fry pan & then soak it up with a piece of bread. The smell was rather off putting so, to cover up the smell/taste, I slathered that canna’d bread with peanut butter and jam. That did the trick, didn’t taste a thing (well, maybe a tiny suggestion).

We were blasted out of our 18, 19, 20 year old skulls for about 36 hours.

Edit to add: Not only was it a cerebral high, it was also a body high. Everything went wavy.

[–] Best movies to watch stoned? justtiptoeingthru 0 points ago in trees

Yeah, that scene was mostly what I was referring to as visceral and gory. I actually saw the movie in 3D at an IMAX theater. My friend and I ate fairly strong edibles before going to the movies that day. Experience was 11/10.

[–] Best movies to watch stoned? justtiptoeingthru 3 points ago in trees

Inside Out I know... this is animated but it’s so deep and insightful.

Gravity Sandra Bullock & the vast emptiness of Space.

Spaceballs Mel Brooks. John Candy. Rick Moranis. Daphne Zuniga. Bill Pullman.

The Revenant It’s rather gory and visceral but such a powerful movie. DiCaprio did a good job.

[–] Where could have ASL been useful? justtiptoeingthru 2 points ago * (lasted edited 4 days ago) in deaf

If you became an ASL interpreter, you’d be placed in situations where your knowledge and skill with ASL would be indeed quite valuable.

Edit to add: As an interpreter, you could very well be part of a labor/delivery team helping a Deaf woman give birth. Or work with police to interview a witness/victim/suspect. Or interpret a dry history lecture for a college student. There is a huggggeeee variety of situations that need an interpreter. We actually have a shortage of qualified & certified interpreters.

    Thanks for the fascinating read.

Anyone up to doing an ELI5 on how this magic works?

My dad thinks there’s either 4-5 balls within balls or one giant ball within a ball underneath the treadmill walking surface. I have absolutely no idea & can’t see how my dad’s idea would even work... hence the ELI5 request.

See these all day long at Bed Bath & Beyond. Sometimes at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx/HomeGoods.

    Interesting as meh, to me.

[–] Image Comic's "No Mercy" - anyone happen to know what these signs are in both the panels? justtiptoeingthru 9 points ago in asl

Yes, now that I’ve seen the comic panels in question... I do agree with Dreamyerve’s suggestion that the signing character is requesting an interpreter.

As for the “subnormal” comment... oh yeah I’d want a certified interpreter to be able to convey exactly what I thought about that comment.

    Saltines, cream cheese, jalapeño jelly
