[–] Kanye West probably thinks he is a genius because he spends most his time with the Kardashians. ks501 0 points ago in Showerthoughts

Lyrical genius is a much more reasonable claim. The Beatles and Michael Jackson were not genius either. No, man sales =/=genius. Simple music like most of what you see in popular genres doesn't require the skill of a musical genius and there isn't enough to those formats to display those skills. There are heights to greatness in music that Kanye, the Beatles, or whoever didn't reach. Your favorite music, the music you like, sales, award winners in popular categories none of that has any bearing on whether something rises to the level of genius. I don't get why you guys interpret that as an insult and refuse to get it. If someone is great at Math gets a 4.0 in a double math major and becomes an actuary and makes millions of dollars, they're still not a math genius. There are people putting humans in space and bringing them back and discovering new mathematical languages, those people might not play well at parties but they're still smarter than your math buddy. Thomas Ade's music might not play well at parties and less people like it, I don't really even like it, but his skills are way beyond that of the Beatles or Kanye. That doesn't mean people should buy it! Doesn't mean it's on my I-Pod. The claim that someone is a genius though kind of takes the opinion out of it. You can say College Dropout was one of the best albums in any genre in the last 30 years and you're not wrong. If you say it required the skills of a musical genius to create, you are wrong. Lyrical genius, pioneer, whatever, that's all more reasonable.

No, I like a lot of hip hop. I just compare apples to apples. You want to tell me Kanye is a genius. I want to tell you someone like Thomas Ade is a genius. There is no way to display musical genius with constant 4/4 beats and simple melodies. That isn't genius music, lol. Good for him for winning grammy's but I don't think that changes the material of his music. If Kanye writes a fugue and scores a play, I'll back down. On that note, I don't know anything about him, but Lin Manuel Miranda is probably a better candidate to be a musical genius. I think he works exclusively with hip-hop and that type of music. He might not be a rapper per se, but he is probably closer to having a legitimate musical genius case over a guy who works exclusively in the 4/4 and just tries to rhyme clever things with "nigga." Didn't I ask whether you played an instrument or have any training? It might have been someone else, but I'm interested in that because I don't think you know the first thing about writing music or how simple Kanyes music really is from a composition stand point. Lyrical content really isn't part of the equation to me. That's musical talent to fit words into a beat, sure, but to me musical genius is more about rhythm and melody and lyrical content is secondary. I think it's hard to rise to the level of a music genius in that genre. I think it's hard to rise to the level of a music genius if your music is confined to any one genre.

I think I've elaborated very clearly on what I think a musical genius is/does so I'm not going to reiterate. I'm left wondering what you know about music. What is it specifically about Kanyes music that makes him a genius? Don't tell me he changed rap or some vague shit. Tell me specifically. Also, do you play an instrument or have you ever participated in any semblance of a music program on any level? Middle school chorus, anything.

All I know about Zimmer is he was one of the pioneers of synth and scores films. I have a lot of respect for disco/funk musicians, and I think it's interesting to hear guys like Zimmer talk about that stuff and I think that's all I know him from. I think europe really popularized synths and all that and I've gone down a few youtube rabbit holes listening to people talk about the music scene in the 70s in Italy and Germany etc. I just googled it and I think I have the right guy and I really don't know much about his film scores other than that is why his name is so big now. I still don't see what Zimmer being a fraud has to do with this though. Am I supposed to have an opinion on every musician in the world because I have an opinion on Kanye? I don't know enough about Zimmer but hes definitely been an accomplished synth/pianist for a long time. That's more than Kanye can say I guess, but I feel like this is a whole other topic. I don't know much about Zimmer.

Again, this doesn't really have to do with what I listen to, what music people buy or anything like that. I've had some musical training, so I don't view somebody rhyming broke nigga and gold digga as magic. Your name is spun_wook, isn't there a disco biscuits concert you can youtube to keep yourself occupied?

[–] Kanye West probably thinks he is a genius because he spends most his time with the Kardashians. ks501 -2 points ago in Showerthoughts

Wasn't Zimmer one of the first guys to go from playing Piano and traditional keys to being one of the early European synth pioneers? Now he scores films, yeah? I think Zimmer has a level of musical skill that isn't really analogous with Kanye so I don't get the point of the question.

So sales = genius to you? That seems to be the overall message I'm getting from the Kanye fans. I'm not interested in sales figures. If you can't play an instrument, read sheet, or talk theory, you're not a musician. Full stop.

[–] Kanye West probably thinks he is a genius because he spends most his time with the Kardashians. ks501 -11 points ago in Showerthoughts

I'm not really sure what that has to do with my assertion that he isn't a musical genius. Whether or not touring acts read sheet music isn't the point. I would argue that there isn't enough to popular music for a musical genius to display said skills within a 2-5 minute verse - chorus - verse - bridge - chorus type format or anything even remotely related to that. I don't think there are musical genius's in popular music. Maybe Stewart Copeland? You'd really have to know nothing about creating music on any level to think The Beatles or Kanye or the Rolling Stones or whoever are musical genius's. So they popularized new genres? That isn't what a musical genius is. Someone like Thomas Ade is a musical genius. He scores films and stage productions and writes for like 5 instruments. Paul McCartney isn't a musical genius. Kurt Kobain isn't a musical genius. Or whatever pop musician you want to throw out there. Certainly not a dude who plays no instruments, can't read sheet, and talks about putting vaginas in sarcophogus's.

[–] Kanye West probably thinks he is a genius because he spends most his time with the Kardashians. ks501 -8 points ago in Showerthoughts

A+ sarcasm. You really showed me. Except popular consumption and musical genius aren't really the same thing. I'm not putting down his music. There isn't really enough to a Kanye song for a musical genius to even display his skills if they were a "musical genius." Have you ever played an instrument or had any musical training?

[–] Kanye West probably thinks he is a genius because he spends most his time with the Kardashians. ks501 -1 points ago in Showerthoughts

Not really, dude. It sucks that people want to lower standards in art and just praise people for basic shit that's been done for decades. There is nothing genius about the music Kanye makes. Rhyming "broke niggas" with "gold digga" and putting pussies in sarcophagus's isn't genius.

No, his music isn't genius. He can't even sheet read music. He doesn't play an instrument. Just stop.

E: lol, and now all the butthurt Kanye fans want to tell me how many albums he's sold. i know they can't afford instruments to teach you guys music out in the hood, but your boy ain't a genius

I know, Red Sox fans always want to throw out the nearly 2000 IP he has in his career pitching to a 3.25 ERA and then call me reactionary when I'm pleased Price pitched well. Lol. Less reactionary? You mean like flipping out over a poor post-season pitching sample that represents .7% of his career innings? Like that kind of reactionary?

Also the irony is not lost on me that you just complained about recency bias and then cited the previous 3 outings as evidence that guy with a 122 ERA+ this season deserved criticism. lol
