[–] Tf is going on near speedway? litsax 0 points ago in UTAustin

I really hope there wouldn't be protests of just sharing Saudi culture, Russian culture, or any other culture. Culture and heritage != politics

[–] Tf is going on near speedway? litsax 10 points ago in UTAustin

IIRC its a jewish culture thing, not an Israel thing. I went and hung out once and it was really nice. Just a fun activity day put on by the student jewish center in west campus that gives out free food and coffee and pictures with animals. They even tried inviting the protesters to join the festivities. Protesting friendly jewish cultural outreach is dumb. These people and their message are a separate thing from the israel-palestine conflict.

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 1 points ago in AmItheAsshole

OP said the house wasn't owned outright and that the estate owed other private debts. I don't find it unreasonable at all that there's roughly ten thousand left after everything, personally.

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax -1 points ago in AmItheAsshole

I meannnn if you were in this position would you not find living there extremely reasonable? OP literally lived there to fix and then sold it. Brother wasn't there either and didn't complain. This is family stuff, might've even been a childhood home. I wouldn't feel like I was doing something wrong in this scenario. The brother is realizing the actual money from the house and didn't have to put in any of the hard work himself. There's absolutely no reason to demand rent for that besides being greedy and selfish. I'm no lawyer, but just be a person and look at it as if it were your situation.

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax -1 points ago in AmItheAsshole

Who would pay to live in a house undergoing active renovations? I think it's quite sensible to stay there yourself if you really are doing the renovations. Call it labor costs for the DIY or something lol

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 2 points ago in AmItheAsshole

Yeah the utilities thing is for sure unkosher and should be paid back. But OP said there was still a mortgage with the house, so most of the money probably went to that. Leftover money then went to settle debts with the estate (including to op for renovation costs, which it doesn't seem like op billed himself for labor for), leaving only a few thousand. The renovations probably yielded a net profit, just that the money got sucked away by debts owed by the estate (and most of that likely from the remaining mortgage)

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 3 points ago in AmItheAsshole

Oohhh ok (just FYI that's definitely not the impression I got from that wording). IMO it's not reasonable for you to pay "fair market rent" while the house is undergoing renovations, but what's fair and reasonable isn't always what's legal. All in all it seems reasonable for there not to be much money leftover after settling debts with the estate (including to yourself), and if anything, you'd only owe your brother half of fair market rent anyways, which you might be able to argue should be reduced due to fair market value being plunged due to active renovations. Good luck!

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 9 points ago in AmItheAsshole

What does took money off the top mean? That sounds sketch af

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 8 points ago in AmItheAsshole

Then the original question still stands. How did you not at least get the value of the renovations back in the sale price? Was the house not close to being owned outright so there just wasn't much leftover equity after the sale and paying off the remaining mortgage?

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 2 points ago in AmItheAsshole

But OP paid the mortgage for two years plus legal fees. 90k seems possible for actual expenses like that. Plus who would pay to rent a house that's in the middle of renovations? It's definitely possible that OP is misappropriating money here, but also possible that these were just the costs of getting this house sold.

[–] AITA for not giving my brother a bigger inheritance? litsax 4 points ago in AmItheAsshole

What if it's for repairs? Like the foundation or something needed to be fixed and it wasn't just cosmetic improvements. Those wouldn't really increase the value of the house beyond being able to pass inspection and be sellable.

[–] Fareeha Stream with Overwatch Developer Aaron litsax 20 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

How are her comments any different than saying Korea is the best region? As far as I'm aware, she didn't comment on South America in terms of its culture or people or anything else but the regions skill at overwatch, which, on aggregate, can be definitively proven true or false. What's so bad about her comments?

[–] AITA for speaking a 'micro-aggression' against my black coworker litsax -3 points ago in AmItheAsshole

I mean wasn't it a compliment? I don't really see how being genuinely told that an aspect of myself is cool and expressive by someone else would be offensive whatsoever.

What if Pokémon is something the couple bonds over? It could be special to them because of their own experiences. Maybe they met through playing together, or like to play together a lot, or are just both really big fans of the series? Who are you to say what a valid expression of someone else's relationship? You have no idea what the significance of Pokémon is to that couple and instead choose to judge and demean them behind a screen while they are (presumably) living a happily married/engaged life. If this were me and you told me that my expression of love towards my fiancé or wife were wrong because you don't like it, I'd rightfully tell you to fuck off. Maybe stop being a judge mental asshole for a few minutes and let people do the things that make them happy.

[–] AITA for not wanting my girlfriend’s brother to be our mover? litsax 10 points ago in AmItheAsshole

It's not the money, it's the appearance of a kickback. Your gf should have your back regardless (because it's making you uncomfortable over the thing that literally allows you to have food and shelter) and her brother should understand based on professionalism. Honestly, even if your gf's brother's business were a moving company, I probably wouldn't hire it because it gives off the image of favoritism to friends and family in professional matters. This has nothing to do with money and everything to do with appearances and trust that you're making the right financial decision for the company and not playing favorites for personal reasons.

[–] AITA for not wanting my girlfriend’s brother to be our mover? litsax 19 points ago in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Anyone who thinks your brother's request is kosher completely blows my mind. To me, the situation seems like a huge conflict of interest and a great way to lose your employer's trust before you start your job. If you're willing to skirt propriety on something this small, how can you be trusted when something bigger is on the line? Don't jeopardize your professional reputation over something so small. Maybe it's just my perspective from academia (where money is given through outside grants with very specific rules for its use, with serious consequences for breaking them), but I would never dream of something like this. How is it gonna look from the outside? With stuff like this, even an appearance of i propriety can be severely damaging.

It's almost like different people have different preferences or something.... I would not be embarrassed about something like this in the slightest and anyone who showed contempt towards me for a story like this deserves to be ignored.

[–] There’s only one lane open on Texas litsax 5 points ago in aggies

If you need to get groceries or something, take university west to 2818 south and it'll take you straight to HEB on 2818 and wellborn (about 3 miles south of campus on wellborn). You can also take 2818 north if you wanna head into bryan.

Daddario jazz select unfiled 3H I think they're perfect but I like hard reeds. Think they fill out my tone and compliment my air support.

[–] Outlaws welcome HEB as a partner litsax 5 points ago in Competitiveoverwatch

That's because walmarts produce is trash and HEBs is has some of the best. I've been to HEBs that had produce sections and butchers that rivaled Whole Foods. It's not just better than Walmart; it's better than Kroger, food lion, Albertsons, or really any other non specialty grocery store I've been to. The regularly source local ingredients and even make things fresh in the store (like guac and tortillas!) seriously it's the best grocery store ever and it has nothing to do with being Texan. Oh yeah a lot of them are also 24hrs.

[–] Can getting your morning cup of coffee at your kitchen coffee bar be cozy? litsax 19 points ago in CozyPlaces

For espresso, quality grind is extremely important. I doubt you can even find a burr grinder for $20, let alone one good enough to have a reasonably consistent grind. Basically, because espresso uses high pressure water forced through finely ground coffee, small deviations in grind size have a large effect on how the pressurized water moves through the coffee. This can lead to weakly brewed or scalded espresso due to the entire shot not getting the same exposure to the pressurized water. Unfortunately, $100 or so seems to be the entry point for a burr grinder good enough to make this precise of a grind for a good pull of espresso. Its quite a finicky thing to make, honestly.

[–] Do's and Don'ts of Using D.Va's Defense Matrix litsax 1 points ago in OverwatchUniversity

Yea it was supposed to be rhetorical lol. Just sayin it can be good to dm spam damage so your team doesn't burn hp or cooldowns when approaching the enemy team.

[–] Do's and Don'ts of Using D.Va's Defense Matrix litsax 5 points ago in OverwatchUniversity

Why do you see OWL d vas eating things during poke phase then? They often use dm to gain better positioning while not taking unnecessary damage.

[–] Do's and Don'ts of Using D.Va's Defense Matrix litsax 10 points ago in OverwatchUniversity

Have to disagree on not using it for chip damage. If you're a few seconds before the fight, using DM to stop you and your team from taking chip can ensure you and your team have full cooldowns, health, and shields (due to not burning them when taking a more advantageous position). It also stops enemies from getting free ult charge. Just be sure you're holding W when DMing otherwise you're not getting value from it. Just like using a bubble before the main engagement to farm charge, your DM should be recharged (if timed well) by the time the full teamfight happens.

[–] In need of a bike store with a large bike store with varying prices litsax 6 points ago in Austin

I bought my mtn bike new from bicycle sport shop and it had a coupon for one free tuneup. Clown dog tuned my bike once a month, sometimes replaced components, and gave me a loaner bike while they worked if it took longer than a few hours while I was in class. I haven't experienced their degree of customer service anywhere.
