[–] Why is American higher education seen as the world's gold standard yet American secondary education is viewed so poorly? mjk1093 1 points ago in NoStupidQuestions

Probably because in a neighborhood that wealthy, most students are sent to private schools, leaving the public system with only the kids who got kicked out of private schools for one reason or another. Wasn’t Beverly Hills High known for rampant drug activity and gangs a little while ago?

[–] WSJ: Hedge Funds Could Make One Potential Fed Repo-Market Fix Hard to Stomach mjk1093 -1 points ago in finance

Only because of where they were in their funding cycle. They were lucky, not virtuous.

[–] Virginia Approves the Equal Rights Amendment, Becoming the 38th State to Back It mjk1093 4 points ago in VoteBlue

If that’s true, then why didn’t the 14th Amendment automatically give women the right to vote?

[–] Contrapoints' latest video "Canceling" about left twitter activism is long but incredibly salient mjk1093 1 points ago in neoliberal

Someone once described his style of writing as “globaloney.” That’s the last word on David Brooks as far as I’m concerned.

[–] Teaching Made Me Fat and Tired mjk1093 1 points ago in Teachers

I’ve found that if I want to go to the gym I have to drive directly there from school and then sleep in my car in the parking lot for an hour or so if need be, otherwise I never go.

[–] Does this distribution have a name? mjk1093 1 points ago in learnmath

It wouldn't be negative binomial, since we're picking without replacement, but we figured out it is a special case of the negative hypergeometric. However, I was wondering if it had a canonical name. So far, no one has come up with one.

[–] Does this distribution have a name? mjk1093 1 points ago in learnmath

Could be, but you'd think that just toggling one of the options that form the geometric distribution from with to without replacement would have a canonical name, but I guess not. Perhaps it doesn't have a lot of practical applications.

[–] Does this distribution have a name? mjk1093 1 points ago in learnmath

No, there "x" is defined based on how may times a specific result occurs in a fixed number of draws, not how many draws it takes to get the first result.

[–] Does this distribution have a name? mjk1093 1 points ago in learnmath

That makes sense, thanks. Does it have a more specific name? It seems like it should, but maybe no one ever got around to it.

[–] Does this distribution have a name? mjk1093 1 points ago in learnmath

No, I don't think that's it, the definitions don't seem to match up.

[–] Half of active-duty service members are unhappy with Trump, new Military Times poll shows mjk1093 0 points ago in politics

Where do people get this idea that the military doesn’t vote? I know some top officers don’t, but the rank and file does.

[–] Lawmaker refuses to say if he's becoming a Republican one day ahead of impeachment vote mjk1093 1 points ago in politics

Given that he lived during the Athenian Golden Age, when Athens was rich and decadent, that could well be true.

[–] Half of active-duty service members are unhappy with Trump, new Military Times poll shows mjk1093 5 points ago in politics

Yes, but for a Republican to be at an even split is far more noteworthy. Traditionally the military has been heavily Republican.

[–] Civil war era congressman Thaddeus Stevens: the OG murderer. mjk1093 22 points ago in MurderedByWords

Thaddeus Stevens was one of a breed once numerous in America but now long-since extinct: The progressive religious fundamentalist. In late life he also became a Luddite, and legend has it that he would stand on a high bluff near his home and scowl down at the trains passing on the new rail line built below.

Until recently, his tomb lay entirely neglected in a small cemetery in Lancaster, PA, slowly sinking into the ground. It has recently been refurbished by a local black activist group. Rumors that Stevens had a secret interracial marriage, as depicted in the movie Lincoln, remain unsubstantiated.
