East Africa is not a country

[–] Should some Seattle streets be for pedestrians only? n10w4 1 points ago in urbanplanning

Yeah plus I think quite a few side streets could be turned into small parks or into market style places. At worst they could be made into single lane (no parking) one way streets the rest for pedestrians, maybe a lane for scooters/bikes. Now the question is how to start this?

[–] Yemen on brink of 'world's worst famine in 100 years' if war continues n10w4 3 points ago in chomsky

the numbers and methods they use vary wildly IIRC. Of course, the sins of our enemies means that Assad had numbers up to 400,000 being used (have not checked to see what the most recent update was) and I assume a low estimate is being used here in Yemen. But I do want to know what human rights groups are saying.

[–] What’s the Matter With Manhattan? – The Atlantic – Medium n10w4 1 points ago in urbanplanning

Thanks. What’s the damage predicted with those? I think it was Sandy that had me thinking how much more damage a stronger direct hit would do to the buildings and infrastructure

Random Q: what are the chances of a decent sized hurricane hitting NYC with CC? I feel that a solid hit would hurt the city quite a bit

Any other information on this? 10,000 dead seems like a low estimate IMO.

[–] 'I leave the car at home': how free buses are revolutionising one French city n10w4 2 points ago in urbanplanning

I think you’re underestimating the cost of Lyft (now carbon neutral, or so they claim) when it’s a couple people or more and the time it takes (usually much better). If the bus is free in certain zones we move to a more sustainable future that much easier

Beautiful pic. Got a similar one going to LA the other day. Gorgeous pictures all around since it was a clear day

Sustainable cities. As soon as we price things like cars at their appropriate level, much of this will take care of itself.

[–] Europe’s Capital Cities Keep Getting Richer and Younger n10w4 2 points ago in urbanplanning

This urban rural divide will only get worse (it should accelerate for sustainable reasons, of course) but which political system is ready for it?

[–] MAXXI is a great Museum to visit in Rome. n10w4 0 points ago in rome

I mean, not trying to dismiss the historical importance of classical and renaissance art, but there can be an immediacy to contemporary art that’s just as vital/important

[–] MAXXI is a great Museum to visit in Rome. n10w4 0 points ago in rome

True. Not to dismiss the history of classical and renaissance art as the 21st century work is based on it (even if it throws the framing etc away in a sense) but he newer works can be more relevant. Also the Maxxi seemed to stand on its own versus other contemporary museums as well. In Naples they seemed to have a cool conversation between classical art (Pompeii mainly) and modern artists that was especially informative (at the Madre).

True, the building is pretty damn impressive.

Depends what you’re into, I suppose.

[–] Double decker metro train in Sydney n10w4 1 points ago in EngineeringPorn

This is pretty sweet. Should be used more (nyc etc could use em). Also, people, havingnit for a metro vs regional rail is a whole different ball park kinda thing
