[–] Thoughts on the Empathy episode... offensivename 1 points ago in invisibilia

It is extremely well known that women's suffering garners more empathy

    You're confusing empathy and sympathy.

They could have definitely paid more attention to the age gap, but he says in the interview that he lied to her about his age.

And yet Lena was totally convinced that because he was an incel, he must be the demon.

No. She's convinced that he was "the demon" because he sent nude pictures of his ex to her friends, family, and professors. And then he showed up at her house uninvited to try to win her back or whatever and wants to play the victim. That's "demonic" behavior no matter what age you are.

I don't know that McSweeney's intentionally sought to run a reversal. They're open to submissions from the public, so the idea that they'd run conflicting viewpoints isn't crazy. Though I'd be shocked if the author of this piece didn't set out to rebut the other one.

Welcoming and accepting people for who they are, regardless of race, religion, or immigration status. And allowing people who don't always have a voice to participate in shaping the way the city operates and grows. Durham certainly isn't perfect in that regard, but it's a lot better than the vast majority of the state and the country.

I don't know about "more socialist," but free college is certainly more radical than free pre-k. Free pre-k just means a one year extension of existing public primary schools. Free college means paying for students to attend 4+ years at a separate school that currently costs tens of thousands of dollars. Not that a year of childcare is cheap by any means. Though really, a big reason leftists get more excited for free college is because a lot of the most vocal leftists are either in college or just out of college. So they can appreciate college being paid for a lot more than they can appreciate expanded early childhood education.

I definitely agree that Medicare for all would come with its own set of problems. Conservatives aren't wrong that government programs can often be inefficient and poorly run. But at least they're somewhat accountable to the voters. Unlike private corporations who are only accountable to their shareholders. Medicare for all certainly isn't a perfect solution, but it's the only big idea that's out there right now. Obamacare isn't the disaster Republicans claim it is, but it didn't do nearly enough. Forcing people to buy insurance they can't afford doesn't solve the problem of overpriced health care.

That's true. I forgot that he specifically mentioned Sanders. I still think it's a worthwhile read though.

Not really a Bernie guy, but I'm curious what makes you think Warren is so much better than him? I like her alright, but that whole ancestry test thing was so incredibly tone deaf and borderline racist. Plus, she'd be over 70 when she was sworn in. Can we please not have any more boomer presidents? Bernie included.

The guy who wrote the article? I don't think he's necessarily arguing for Bernie. And I'm not sure what his exact standards would be based on this. What do you see them as? I just take it as a satire of people who flock to whoever the most boring, already namebrand establishment candidate is and refuse to consider any fresh ideas or candidates. I don't see it as an attack on one particular candidate or an endorsement of anyone.

As I mentioned in other comments, there was an article by a different author on McSweeney's a few weeks ago mocking die-hard leftists who would rather watch the world burn than vote for anyone at all moderate. I see this article as a pointed rejoinder to that piece and I consider both to be fair criticism.

Yipes. Is your argument that there are no women or people of color who are progressive? Because I'm pretty sure there are a bunch. I'm not into purity tests either. And certainly not in favor of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. But there's got to be a better option than played out septigenarians like Joe Biden.

I never said she was crooked. Certainly not when compared to Donald Trump. But to say she's not a centrist or an establishment candidate is straight up laughable. I didn't really have any major issues with her platform, but we have 25+ years of evidence that tells us who she is as a leader. The right-wing media wasn't calling her a centrist at all. They were calling her a radical leftist. Which is the same crap they pull with anyone to the left of Jesse Helms. I'm not even a leftist. But we need fresh voices and ideas. Not the same baby boomer candidates running again and again until they finally win the nomination by inertia.

Personally, I thought both articles were funny and made good points.

Hillary Clinton isn't mentioned in the article or shown in the preview image. If your first response to an article mocking "feckless centrists" is to take it as an attack on her, what does that say about her as a candidate? I mean, the article even mentioned getting rid of the electoral college, which obviously would have given her a win. But still your immediate thought is "Feckless centrism?! They must me talking about my girl, Hillary! Sexism!" And sure, there have been plenty of sexist attacks leveled at Clinton. But "she's a centrist" isn't one of them. It's just true. Some people like that about her. Others do not.

Maybe this was written as a counter to that other article? Hopefully, this thread won't spark a huge fight and get pulled like that last one. Haha

Am I the only one who saw Columbia Noir on the Criterion Channel and originally thought it was movies set in Columbia the country?

[–] Time to Pretend Sansa’s Unreasonable Again, I guess offensivename 18 points ago in GamerGhazi

Dany is super insecure and needs constant validation because she was raised by her domineering asshole older brother. Sansa said the right things when they met and brought up a reasonable concern, but her tone of voice made it clear that she wasn't happy with how things were playing out. They'll both get over it.

[–] What do you love/hate about living here? offensivename 11 points ago in bullcity

It happens even with people who didn't own houses previously too. Let's say a person has been living in New York and making $75,000 per year. If this person had saved 10% of your income over the last 10 years, they'd have $75,000 saved right now. If another person was living somewhere in NC and making $30,000 over the past 10 years and saved 10%, they'd have $30,000 saved up. Maybe both are living in Durham and making 50k now, but the first person has a $45,000 headstart in terms of a down payment and can afford to pay more for a house.

There's also the fact that people coming in from out of state can have higher expectations of what a house should cost and drive up the market that way as well.

[–] What do you love/hate about living here? offensivename 11 points ago in bullcity

True. Though I was living in a cheaper part of North Carolina. It's the people coming from places that had higher housing prices that are really driving things up I think.

[–] What do you love/hate about living here? offensivename 45 points ago in bullcity

Love the culture, the inclusiveness, and the food. Hate that I moved here right when the housing market blew up.

Does it? It's the first Thrice album that I haven't been able to get into at all. Which songs would you recommend I give another listen?
