good point. my current understanding was that in general flying was considered safe 2-3 weeks after successful drainage of pneumothorax, but admittedly I am not an expert so others with more knowledge please chime in

obviously without know specifics of the case I can't say with certainty what his prognosis will be in terms of how long he'll be out for, but in the end assuming no other complications he should be ok long term. perhaps he could be out for a few/several weeks, length depending on whether or not they had to treat the leak with a chest tube.

it was a complication from an intercostal nerve block for a rib injury, where a needle is placed at the undsurface of the rib; this is millimeters away from the surface of the lung, so a puncture (specifically causing a pneumothorax i.e. air leaking from the lung into the chest cavity that can be potentially life threatening) is possible. it's uncommon but not rare, ~1+%. in fact, this would be the top thing to make the patient aware of when getting consent before doing the procedure.

it's an unfortunate, but not unexpected complication- assuming he was made aware of the possibility of it happening before the procedure.
