[–] Hiring committee members, what was the thing a candidate did that really impressed you and/or made a lasting positive impression? sirbissel 1 points ago in Libraries

...so I take it "because you pay money, and I just spent a few thousand on student loans for an MLIS degree that I'd like to actually use, and my loans are coming due." is probably also not a great answer?

It's possible Steve is his middle name and he goes by it, or something.

[–] Hotel workers of reddit, what is the worst thing you have found in a room after a guests stay? sirbissel 1 points ago in AskReddit

When I worked night audit at a hotel, we had a suicide. I didn't find the person, but a housekeeper did.

Another time, we had a guy who stayed at the hotel for a few months. Kept refusing house keeping. I don't remember exactly what happened (I heard about it when I went on shift that night) but the GM and front desk worker ended up going into the room. There was trash piled knee-high in the room, with a horrible smell and fruit flies and gnats just flying around.

Another time, a guy had been evicted from his room, there was vomit all over the place, booze everywhere, and I don't know what else...

I don't know. I feel like Alito and Thomas may at least have enough foresight to understand the implications, and would say no, given it would allow future presidents a huge amount of power.

Although I guess maybe then they wouldn't say no. You know, because of the implications.

[–] What everyday household items are actually way more dangerous than we give them credit for? sirbissel 1 points ago in AskReddit

I'm surprised the frozen food injuries aren't when a pile of frozen food comes rushing out of the freezer that you haphazardly threw in there because that bag of frozen peas is going to fit in there goddamnit.

Wouldn't the head of the executive branch saying it wasn't necessary qualify as that analysis?

Funny thing about papyrus - we don't actually know how they used to make it. I mean, we knew reeds from the Nile, but beyond that, we have an idea, but... it apparently wasn't written down anywhere.

Also, papyrus is where we get the word "paper" from. Also parchment is animal skin, too. Vellum is just better quality parchment from baby animals. It's veal to beef.

...I think you're mistaking Taft for Theodore Roosevelt? Or am I being whooshed?

Taft did have an assassination attempt, but he wasn't actually shot.

[–] What life-altering things should every human ideally get to experience at least once in their lives? sirbissel 2 points ago in AskReddit

Growing up, my grandmother had a cottage on a lake kind of in the woods in northern Michigan. I remember going behind the cottage, where it was dark, and looking up and just being amazed at the stars.

I've tried going back, but the cottage was moved and a large house built on the lot, and it never seems to be as dark as it was...

Though the counterargument is that statements could be incriminating for other, somewhat unrelated things, so depending on the wording of the pardon, one could still invoke the 5th.

[–] Young People Are Doomed by Student Loans, Not the National Debt sirbissel 2 points ago in politics

I have both just because the federal loans would cover -most- of what I needed, but the rest, well.. it's not like I could refinance my parents house for the cash or something.

A couple weeks ago, when we had that cold snap, my kitchen's hot water pipe froze, but the cold water didn't. When I was looking into it, I came across a few things saying stuff like "Hot water pipes are more likely to burst because the initially higher temperature of the water in them makes the formation of ice crystals more difficult. The water in the pipe then supercools, that is, goes below 0°C. Then, when freezing does occur, it occurs rapidly, quickly blocking the pipe and trapping water between itself and the closed valve." source

From what I recall, Eddings explicitly said he didn't want one made. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a clause in his will (or something) that forbade turning it into a movie or series.

[–] Excluding the main books, what would you re-read? sirbissel 1 points ago in dragonlance

I remember enjoying the Icewall trilogy and the Dwarven Nations trilogy.
