[–] u/kevnmartin gives one Brit’s perspective on Trump tapthatsap 1 points ago in bestof

I feel like I lucked out hard, because my parents were fairly “does this make sense or not” kind of people, and I was fortunate enough to have a good run of teachers who encouraged that kind of thinking early on. That was pure luck, though, there was nothing in any curriculum about how to think critically, I just ran into a really excellent series of role models and they helped me piece it together. There should be classes.

You’re going to be alone for a very long time

I never get tired of being impressed that somebody bothered to learn even a little English, because it’s such an unwieldy fucking nightmare of a language. If someone is even one quarter of the way to conversational at it, I will hang out and encourage them as best I can for as long as they like. I’ve also noticed that huge numbers of foreign English speakers have better vocabularies than your average American. That’s sad for us, but pretty impressive for the guy on his second or third language

The fact that it’s untrue makes it untrue. Enjoy your involuntary celibacy.

    I'm tired of franchise culture.

Oh god yes. I’d rather watch someone try and fail to do something slightly novel than watch one of these billion dollar focus grouped to death snooze fests. Ghostbusters was cool because it was weird and novel, not because there’s anything particularly great about busting ghosts. “Hey remember that time we caught lightning in a bottle” is not a reason to keep rebooting stuff

Go back to cringeanarchy you nazi piece of shit

Also I don’t know where that idiot lives, but I pass dozens of homeless Americans every day. They’re not wealthier than anybody, the change in their pocket is just slightly more powerful at a currency exchange, which is completely meaningless for their purposes.

[–] Luckily it’s all-star weekend tapthatsap 1 points ago in BlackPeopleTwitter

Also Americans are wealthier than most around the world, to say that America is doing bad would be a lie.

No we aren’t. Our money is more powerful than most of the rest of the world, but most of us are still living paycheck to paycheck. You’re nothing that even resembles wealthy if a simple injury can bankrupt you like it can for so many of us, you’re just being stupid and deciding that everyone having smart phones means we’re rich.

Yes. It’s a system that gives extra power to places where less people live. He actually lost the popular vote by three million, but he still got in because of the electoral college. Our last president to get in because of the electoral college was George W Bush, so you can see how well this system works for us.

It’s interesting hearing outsiders explain what they think is going on, too. I met this one dude who told me his theory, which is that trump has never actually earned any positive attention, never made a friend, never inspired love in anyone, only paid for these things, and that that’s why he’s so pathologically obsessed with getting attention and having people clap for him. Blew me away, this guy was a bartender speaking his second language and he had a better grasp on the situation than a lot of Americans

I find people are usually cool if you’re cool, but you are going to have to have The Talk. People who don’t meet Americans very often definitely want to better understand what the fuck is going on here, but in my experience it’s not like they blame you personally for it. I think most people understand that trump supporters aren’t the types of people to visit other countries, so you start on a good foot.

[–] TIL that 'burrito' means 'little donkey' in Spanish, named this way because burritos can carry many things, much like a donkey can. tapthatsap 1 points ago in todayilearned

If I win the lottery I’m taking my rudimentary Mexican cooking skills and helping out some places that don’t even have that. There are people out there who don’t even know how bad they need a good deshebrada burrito with an egg in it

Some disrespect, you’re completely correct. If there’s a bunch of sour cream and lettuce and all that shit in there, it’s because the fundamentals are weak.

What does it for me is just thinking about the movie being made. One of my go-to favorites is a movie called Microwave Massacre, it’s a movie about a guy getting fed up with his wife’s fancy, pretentious, European microwave food (???) so he ends up killing and eating her and then a number of other women.

So, the premise is pretty goofy on its own, but then the movie itself is just strange. It was written specifically for Rodney Dangerfield, but when it came time for negotiations, he wanted too much money. Did they rewrite it? No! They just got some guy to do a feature-length Rodney Dangerfield impression. That’s one in a very long series of extremely puzzling decisions that led to the movie as it exists.

Or look at Manos: The Hands of Fate. That one was made by a literal shit salesman on an unbelievably unsuitable camera that could only shoot about a half minute at a time and couldn’t record sound, so all of the dialogue had to be dubbed in later by two dudes and a woman. The production was a nightmare, one of the guys was on acid the whole time, nobody got paid, and the cast and crew found themselves sneaking out of the premiere because it was getting heckled and booed.

That’s what bad movies are for me, weird little studies in ambition and hubris, guys who don’t really know what they’re doing flying as close to the sun as they possibly can and producing horribly mangled results. Incidentally, that’s why I don’t want troma movies ever. If you ask a guy to solve 2 + 2 and tries his best but ends up with his pencil lodged in his nose, that’s fascinating. If he just jams it up there to parody a guy who would do that, he’s just being annoying. Intentional failure is not interesting, unintentional failure is.

Yep. Fast food places would just be fries and soda if they could get away with it
