[–] Why were people in the Book of Mormon baptized centuries before Christ? theonlydidymus 1 points ago in latterdaysaints

I think the key to this question is that the Lord taught Lehi and Nephi. New revelation from the prophets takes priority over what came before.

It doesn’t matter if the Jews performed baptisms, Christ told Nephi it was necessary.

Some thoughts that haven’t been brought up yet:

Nephi didn’t teach his children after the manner of the Jews. I doubt very much that the ancient church in the Americas was an exact clone of Judaism.

The Nephites were a “younger” civilization compared to the Jews, and the instruction they received by revelation in many visions was very clear about the nature of Christ and His gospel.

In 2 Nephi 9 there is clear instruction that baptism is essential to the plan. Given their greater understanding of who Christ was (without the misunderstanding of the role of the Messiah) it makes sense that they would perform baptisms.

The law in Israel was interpreted in different ways over the years according to their own culture and traditions. It’s understanding similarly evolved in the Americas through revelation by the prophets.

I’ve been hoping for a way to pay off my wife’s hospital fees but I don’t feel right asking friends and family who are likely worse off than I am.

That may be so but they’re there to represent their individual states. Texan senators are there to represent Texan citizens and interests. They’re meant to be the collective voice of our state in policy making.

In my experience it’s: bottom third cookie message, top third my browser navbar and a message to use the mobile app of the website, with the middle third being a pop up video with the close-button outside of the viewport.

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. It got totally screwed over by the writer’s strike (in the middle of S2) and didn’t have a strong ending because of it. Could have been incredible, but it was only really good.

Pretty sure it got compressed on upload. I have seen someone’s vector of it though.

Since you asked nicely. Relevant excerpt*:

    > Not common practice to bathe on the roof.

I welcome any sources you have for that claim because it would provide me greater understanding of that story in the Bible, but I'm not going to take a claim like that as true just because someone said it. I return to my earlier point, that just because she did that doesn't change that David had his agency the entire time.

I've been deleting a lot of posts and comments lately in an effort to better anonymize my account. I assume some of my source-asking was deleted. This is my source I used to find my source.

\This was in a discussion with another person who shares my faith about whether or not taking boudoir photos for a spouse is pornography. One of the points of discussion was the situation of David and Bathsheba. I failed to correct the other person that Bath-sheba was not, in fact, bathing on the roof. David only saw her from his vantage point where HE was standing on HIS roof. My linked comment has been edited accordingly.)

I remember when I had to carry around my flip phone and my ipod touch everywhere.

Smartphones solved a few essential problems early on even without needing a massive app library: Portable movies, portable music, a phone, a notebook, reminders, calendars- all of that consolidated into one chunk of plastic. The first smart phones rendered so many things obsolete and cleared up so much space in our pockets and backpacks.

Couldn't blockchain technology be used to create a digital collectible card game?

Like, instead of "coins" the unique items can be card IDs and you have a real life card ecosystem where there are a limited number of copies of a card?

Maybe I still don't understand it right, but I feel like crypto-trading-cards could either be a real thing now, or could be a good use of the technology.

[–] What do you wish was never invented? theonlydidymus 2 points ago in AskReddit

I used to think like this, but not anymore. I think the existence of social media is a net positive for the world, but the actual use of it, what happens on it, and what happens to people who get sucked into it, is a net negative.

The world is better off because we have social media, but individuals are better off when they ease up on it and use it appropriately. I would argue that most people don't know how to use social media appropriately and it ends up hurting them.

I ask for sources on things I'm genuinely curious about. Like if someone makes a matter-of-fact claim in the middle of their comment I'll ask for a source so I can learn, not to disprove or argue with them.

If I won it tonight and hadn't claimed it? Nothing.

If it's the night I took home my lump-sum? I'd get a babysitter, take my wife out, and let her just buy whatever clothes she wants.
