[–] How badly did corona affect you (financially)? thepsychoticpacifist 1 points ago in AskReddit

Not too badly, it's a cheap beer. Just kidding, I worked from home already so I got lucky with my job not changing in the slightest. My long term girlfriend got laid off, but she's got a compromised immune system, so it's better she quarantines anyway. We're doing ... okay financially. Still getting by.

I second both of these recommendations. Weaveworld was just incredible, but BoB introduced me to Barker.

[–] What book had a lasting emotional effect on you? thepsychoticpacifist 1 points ago in AskReddit

Just looked it up and added it to my list - it sounds interesting!

I definitely agree, that book was a ride. P.K.D hasn't ever disappointed me with what I've read of his.

[–] Looking for supernatural horror similar to Summer of Night by Dan Simmons! thepsychoticpacifist 2 points ago in horrorlit

I read The Elementals a long time ago and loved it, it's about time I picked up his other works! Thanks for the suggestion, and reminding me about him

I always hear about that one, but haven't read anything by Straub except for the Talisman, which he did with King. It sounds right up my alley, thanks so much!

I haven't read Desperation or The Regulars yet, two of the few King works I haven't gotten around to! The Ruins is on my shelf in hard and softcover, I love that book a lot. Great suggestion. The Terror is what introduced me to Simmons, I was really pleased that Ridley Scott produced the show because the novel always reminded me of a non-scifi retelling of Alien. I'll check out that Barron book, I love what I've read so far. And Adam Nevill is another favorite of mine, I read Last Days and weirdly enough started a bit of a correspondence with him after I sent him a fan email asking a question about the ending. He's a delightful dude. Thanks so much for taking the time to suggest some stuff!

[–] Pretty good birthday haul this year thepsychoticpacifist 3 points ago in horrorlit

I loved it so much I wrote Adam Nevill a fan email telling him what it meant to me. I'm not usually the type of person to do that kind of thing. He wrote back, and we actually started a small correspondence! He's a really nice guy, and an amazing author.

I read The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All a while back and was thoroughly chilled. I don't know why I haven't explored more of his work, I'll be sure to do that. I don't think I've ever read anybody who writes quite like he does.

I read Boy's Life a few years back, it actually did scratch that itch. I should have mentioned it in the post, it was a beautiful novel all the way around. Maybe not exclusively horror, but the atmosphere and poetic nature of seeing the nuances of a small Southern town through the eyes of a youngster was wonderful. SWTWC is something I've been putting off for years, but I know it's on my shelf so I'll give that a go immediately. Thanks for the suggestions!

[–] Right from *now* your need for sleep is gone. You can now stay awake till your eventual death without any consequences. How would the extra time (that you get from not sleeping) affect your life? thepsychoticpacifist 1 points ago in AskReddit

I think I read some philosophy book that theorized that humans would be far more prone to suicide without sleep, even if we didn't physically need it anymore. Our emotional faculties aren't equipped to be on all the time without a break or a reboot. That said, I would probably spend all of that extra time goofing off.

[–] What's a time you almost died or were convinced you were about to die? thepsychoticpacifist 1 points ago in AskReddit

That's legitimately terrible. :( I'm glad you're okay. Is there any lasting damage or complications if you don't mind me asking?

[–] What strange habit did you have as a child? thepsychoticpacifist 1 points ago in AskReddit

I did this too! Also responses, statements, pretty much everything. I whispered it before I'd say it to them.
