[–] My ancestry: Comparing my genealogy research to my 23andme's DNA results [OC] thwompz 17 points ago in dataisbeautiful

They use the massive amounts of data for research on genetic markers for disease. Obviously pharamceutical companies are interested. It allows for the development of drugs targeted to specific genomic make ups. In the agreement they stipulate they don't attach a name or info about an individual to it.

I get the concern. Insurance companies using pre-existing conditions etc (which aren't a thing anymore anyway). But these companies make it 1000x easier to get research information on genetic markers for particular diseases. You can do a survey when you submit your DNA about your health etc so if they find, let's say 80 percent of people who say they have x disease have this weird genetic marker, that is super valuable information.

[–] New Jersey becomes fourth state to increase minimum wage to $15 thwompz 4 points ago in news

Isn't that good? Like if you're making the same amount of money as before the increase but also have more free time, that's still a net benefit imo

[–] Realistically, What major changes can we expect in the next 50 years? thwompz 11 points ago in AskReddit

The geography of the Netherlands was somewhat different. They had a large bay they we're able to just build a dam across and lower the sea level, and swampy areas they were able to drain over hundreds of years. For New York we can probably build sea walls around and protect New York harbor (so Manhattan, and parts of buroughs facing the east river boroughs facing Manhattan) but some outlying areas are barely above sea level and would require building basically 30-50 ft walls for hundreds of miles of coastline if you want to protect the entire metro area. The airports will probably be saved, but some areas like cony island, fire island, South shore long island, and parts of staten island just won't be economically worth it. Basically everything that flooded in hurricane Sandy can be expected to be permanently flooded in 50 years

I don't think she's really promiscuous. She makes comments, sure, but over the whole series she's only has sex with one person.

[–] Realistically, What major changes can we expect in the next 50 years? thwompz 9 points ago in AskReddit

I image only small areas of the coast could be saved realistically since it would be very expense. Like manhattan will probably get a sea wall, but staten island and parts of brooklyn might just be left to flood.

Some states you need to be registered Republican u can still vote in Republican primaries. So if they want to actually make the party less shitty they should stay Republican.

The thing is there's already fences and shit along it for the most part. What difference would a higher fence make? They could just use the money to have drone patrols and shit instead

[–] Giuliani: "I never said there was no collusion between the campaign" and Russians thwompz 1 points ago in worldnews

The main thing to really look at is his disapproval ratings, which have been steadily above 50 almost his entire time in office. In the past when a president was at 40 something approval, usually his disapproval was only around 30 something with a bunch of unsure. Trump has a much higher disapproval rate than most

I remember a lot of people believing that in the early 2000s for some reason. The theory was blood is blue until it is oxygenated since our veins are blue or some shit, so blood would be blue until it exits your body. In reality deoxygenated blood is just darker. It was dumb but I also thought it was true when I was 8 or so.
